A 42-year-old woman was recently sentenced to 22 years and 6 months imprisonment in the Perth District Court in relation to child sexual offences which spanned between Australia and Ukraine.

The woman was charged in July 2021 by detectives from the Child Abuse Squad with 13 offences relating to the ongoing and sustained sexual abuse of a child, including child exploitation.

In 2022, the woman’s male partner and co-accused, was also charged in relation to similar offences and he was sentenced to 23 years and six months imprisonment.

Electronic devices seized during the investigation identified an online chat with the accused having a conversation of an explicit sexual nature with a child and other chats also of a sexual nature involving other children.  Vision of a child who has been indecently recorded, in addition to numerous images of child exploitation material were also located.

During this investigation, WA Police Force engaged in an integrated holistic approach and collaborated closely with partner agencies, to ensure the victim was able to be in a safe environment and provided access to ongoing support for her physical and mental wellbeing.

Quote attributable to Detective Acting Superintendent David Palmer – Sex Crime Division:
“Detectives from the Child Abuse Squad are relentless in their efforts to identify, locate, and apprehend anyone who sexually abuses a child. These crimes will not be tolerated.

“Child sexual abuse is one of the most horrific crimes imaginable. It destroys lives and leaves lasting trauma for victims and their families. Every image or video of child exploitation material is not just a picture – it is evidence of a real child being abused. Behind every file is a victim who has suffered unimaginable harm.

“The 22 years and 6 months custodial term reflects the gravity and sustained nature of the offending and the profound harm caused to the victim. It is a significant sentence that reinforces community condemnation of child sexual abuse, provides strong deterrence, and ensures community protection.”
