$2million Hampton Senior High School upgrade for theatre, dance and sports facilities
Theatre, dance and fitness activities face a major boost as part of a $2million upgrade at Hampton Senior High School in Perth's eastern suburbs.
Education Minister Liz Constable today announced the funding would redevelop the Eric Strauss Centre at the school, providing a significant benefit to students and the local community.
The centre, shared by Hampton Senior High School with other schools and community groups, has a gymnasium, theatre arts workshop and dance studio.
"The centre was first opened in 1985 and this $2million new investment by the State Government will revitalise Hampton Senior High School's distinctive focus on gifted and talented dance and specialist performing arts programs," Dr Constable said.
A further $150,000 will be used to upgrade the school's Design and Technology area.
"The further good news is that no land will need to be sold at the school to fund the redevelopment," the Minister said.
Previously 1.15ha of land on the school's 11ha site in Morley was earmarked to be sold off to pay for the Eric Strauss Centre upgrade.
Dr Constable said the land would now be retained to allow for potential future growth at the school.
"Savings achieved by the Department of Education through favourable tender results on other projects will ensure the school receives the upgrade, without sacrificing any of its original site," she said.
The acclaimed dance and theatre production programs at the Eric Strauss Centre have been attributed to the career success of many past students.
"Graduates of these programs boast success on the international and national arts and media stages," the Minister said.
They include dancer Douglas DeVoogt; singer and dancer Warwick Reid; Zoran Trivic and Brad Campbell from the pop band Gyroscope; pop star Samantha Jade who is currently working in the US; ballet dancer Hayden Teo, and television news reader Narelda Jacobs.
