Transport Minister Troy Buswell today announced $900,000 in State Government funding for the City of Albany to plan and build significant bike network projects.

Mr Buswell said initially the funding would be used to support the development of a Cycling and Trails Strategy for the City of Albany.

"The city and the Department of Transport will work in close collaboration for the development of the plan and prioritisation of bike projects," he said.

"Both organisations have forged strong relationships with members of the local cycling community and have recognised this to be imperative for the successful development of the bike network.

"The State Government is committed to supporting cycling in the Great Southern region, and strengthening the plans for Albany to develop into a bicycle-oriented city."

The Minister said a number of projects were to be completed which would deliver a total of 5.7km of additional cycling infrastructure to the city.

"The projects include the construction of shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians through Eyre Park and Anzac Peace Park, and high visibility bicycle lanes for on-road cycling on Emu Point Drive, Golf Links Road and Troode Street," he said.

Mr Buswell said a further 3km of cycling infrastructure was expected to be identified and developed following the completion of the Cycling and Trails Strategy.

"The next round of projects will be delivered with the balance of the funds," he said.
