Following success at the Sundance Film Festival and after launching to full houses in Wyndham and Broome, Western Australian feature film 'Mad Bastards' will have its national release on May 5.

Ahead of its Perth premiere tonight, Acting Culture and the Arts Minister Troy Buswell said the State Government was proud to have supported this powerful film.

"ScreenWest provided more than $300,000 in development and production funding to help bring the unique voices and characters of the Kimberley to the big screen in 'Mad Bastards'," Mr Buswell said.

"While the story is predominantly set in a remote indigenous community, it is a story that has universal themes everyone can relate to - themes of men and women trying to do the best they can for themselves and their family in trying circumstances.

"The indigenous talent and culture in the Kimberley is rich and now, thanks to films like 'Mad Bastards', this is being shared with the rest of Australia and the world."

'Mad Bastards' is produced by Alan Pigram, Stephen Pigram, David Jowsey and Brendan Fletcher and the cast features Dean Daley-Jones, Greg Tait, John Watson, Ngaire Pigram and Lucas Yeeda.

Writer/director Brendan Fletcher collaborated closely with the lead actors and community members, drawing on their real life stories.

The music is by Alan and Stephen Pigram and multi-ARIA Award winner Alex Lloyd, all of whom appear in the film.

'Mad Bastards' will be in cinemas from May 5.
