Not only is $50,000US up for grabs at this weekend's SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Mandurah, but also a berth in the World Championships.

Acting Tourism Minister John Day said that goal had lured 1,500 local, national and international competitors to the Peel region for the event on Sunday.

"Professional athletes will be competing for the prize money, while age group athletes will be vying for one of 40 qualifying spots in the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Austria," he said.

The picturesque course includes a 1.9 kilometre swim, a 90km cycle along the Indian Ocean and a 21.1km run that finishes on the Mandjar Bay foreshore.

"Mandurah has become a popular stop on the IRONMAN circuit since the first race was held in the coastal city in October 2012," Mr Day said.

"The State Government is proud to support SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Mandurah through Tourism WA and Royalties for Regions and is an important part of our strategy to increase the value of tourism to $12 billion by 2020."

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said Royalties for Regions funding had significantly boosted the number and quality of events across the entire State.

"This event will not only add vibrancy to the region, but it will also promote Mandurah as an exciting place to live, work and visit," Mr Redman said.
