Science plays vital role in development of ideas and innovations
A researcher, dedicated to solving the complex challenges of artificial intelligence (AI), has been named the 2012 Western Australian Early Career Scientist of the Year.
Associate Professor Ajmal Mian, Australian Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia, is working to enhance the application of artificial intelligence, particularly three-dimensional (3D) face and object recognition, to solve a range of problems faced by industry and other end-users.
Science and Innovation Minister John Day congratulated Associate Professor Mian, as well as the five other award recipients and the 2012 Western Australian Science Hall of Fame Inductee, all of whom were honoured tonight at the 11th annual Western Australian Science Awards presentation ceremony.
"Associate Professor Mian has achieved outstanding outcomes in the short time since completing his PhD. His research is revolutionising the application of artificial intelligence across a range of science disciplines and industry sectors," Mr Day said.
"For example, Professor Mian led the development of a unique hand identification system that uses a hyperspectral camera to capture palm lines and the veins underneath for biometric identification.
"Associate Professor Mian has established a range of productive collaborations, including working with health clinicians to research the application of 3D face analysis for disease diagnosis and treatment planning.
"Innovation and advances in science play a crucial role in ensuring continued development of the State and prosperity for our future generations and the Western Australian Science Awards provide an opportunity to recognise the people whose passion and commitment to science research, engagement and education is making a significant impact."
