Hon. Colin Barnett
The State Government has provided $1.1million to allow restorative works on Mt Clarence to start as Albany prepares for the commemoration of the ANZAC centenary in 2015.
Premier Colin Barnett said the first tranche of the Liberal-National Government's $8million funding commitment would be available to the City of Albany from tomorrow (Monday).
"Albany played a central role in the ANZAC war effort as the place from which the first two convoys of Australian soldiers left for Gallipoli, and we expect Mt Clarence will be a major focus of the nation's centenary commemorations," Mr Barnett said.
"The centenary is of major historical significance for Albany, and the State Government will work closely with all involved to ensure it is a well-planned event Albany can be proud of."
The Premier said discussions were ongoing between the State and Federal governments and the City of Albany regarding the proposed ANZAC Interpretive Centre.
"The State's commitment to this project has not changed, however, it is important that all stakeholders work together to develop a sustainable business model for the ongoing operation of the centre," he said.
"The State Government, with the City of Albany, supports a scaled-down version of the current proposal and will continue to work with all interested parties to deliver a suitable place of remembrance by 2015."
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the State Government's contribution would ensure the necessary work was completed in time for the convoy centenary commemoration in November 2014.
