Additional Murdoch Station parking bays open

The Liberal-National Government has delivered on the first part of its $49.

The Liberal-National Government has delivered on the first part of its $49.5million State Budget commitment to add another 3,000 parking spaces at train stations on the Mandurah and Joondalup lines.

Transport Minister Simon O'Brien and Jandakot MLA Joe Francis today officially opened an extra 160 parking bays at Murdoch Train Station, on time and on schedule.

Mr O'Brien said that the work, staged to minimise disruption and cost the least possible number of bays in the interim, takes the total number of free parking spots at Murdoch Station to 1,144.

"Common sense infrastructure projects such as additional parking at train stations have tremendous flow-on effects," he said.

"They give a greater number of people access to the public transport network, many of who might otherwise have driven all the way to work, adding to traffic congestion."

Mr Francis said that the additional parking bays were a win for the people of Murdoch.

"This Government is committed to ensuring that residents who use the station have increased access to parking facilities," Mr Francis said.

"I am proud to be a part of a team that is delivering basic services to the people of the southern metropolitan area."

The Minister said that with work at Murdoch completed, work had already started on a similar program to expand parking at Cockburn Central Station.

"As was the case at Murdoch, the Cockburn work will be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption.  Areas north of the station and at the eastern end of the existing car park are being considered," he said.

"However, as an interim measure, 64 temporary bays have been created by using land opposite the existing car park, until the permanent sites are chosen."
