Mental Health Minister Dr Graham Jacobs consulted key agency officials today, regarding the implementation of the section 175 (1) (a) over the Oombulgurri Community.

Mental Health Minister Dr Graham Jacobs consulted key agency officials today, regarding the implementation of the section 175 (1) (a) over the Oombulgurri Community. 

Some residents may experience acute symptoms of withdrawal as a result of the initiative and Dr Jacobs is confident of the committed immediate response by health services to meet the needs of the people of Oombulgurri.  

"Initially, it is of paramount importance to give assistance and support to individuals experiencing symptoms of substance withdrawal as a result of the alcohol ban," he said.

The Minister supported the move to introduce a total alcohol ban at Oombulgurri.

"This major initiative will improve the lifestyle, health and longevity of the residents and of the community itself," he said.

Dr Jacobs welcomed the well co-ordinated response across a number of Government agencies including Health, Indigenous Affairs, Police, Education and non-Government service providers, to combat the serious social issues currently faced by families at Oombulgurri.

The Minister confirmed that strong support structures had been instigated within the community, including an increased permanent police presence, additional teachers for the school and a focus on crucial health requirements.   

"It is vital that the implementation of the alcohol ban at Oombulgurri is supported in the long term with improved services, education and community programs and access to mental health providers for the residents," he said.
