Education Minister Peter Collier today opened applications for an elite public school education program that helps outstanding students reach their potential.

Applications for the Gifted and Talented program, offered in 17 Western Australian secondary schools, are now being sought from parents whose children start year 8 in 2015.

"The Gifted and Talented program in public schools has gone from strength to strength, offering innovative and flexible courses tailored for high-ability students," Mr Collier said.

"Specialist teachers work closely with universities and leading industry professionals to create challenging and stimulating learning opportunities for the children.  Gifted students thrive in this environment and the results speak for themselves."

Of the 119 public school students who achieved Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranks of 99 and more in 2011, 88 attended schools running Gifted and Talented programs.

The Minister said entry into the programs was very competitive and all students needed to sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test.  In addition, students gifted in the arts were required to attend an audition or workshop and might be asked to provide a portfolio of work, or attend an interview.

"Last year, more than 2,800 year 6 students applied for testing for placement into a Gifted and Talented program, an increase of more than 20 per cent on the previous year," he said.

The Gifted and Talented program has produced many high-achievers including:

  • 2010 WACE Beazley Medallist Michael Taran (Perth Modern School) who is now studying medicine at The University of Western Australia

  • The Butcher and The Crow fashion designer Elisha Quintal (Applecross Senior High School art program)

  • Balcatta Senior High School art graduate Daniel Marsh, who is working on special effects for the new Wolverine movie currently being filmed in Sydney.
