Huge crowd to add to visitor numbers of more than four million at Elizabeth Quay since it opened in January
Arcadia to feature an Aboriginal dance not performed traditionally in public for more than a century
Thousands of visitors are expected at Elizabeth Quay - Perth's newest and highly popular tourist destination - over the next three days as international act Arcadia Spectacular gets underway.
In an Australian-first, the award-winning United Kingdom production featuring a 50,000 tonne mechanical spider, and musical, theatrical and artistic performances, will hold three exclusive shows starting today (November 25), following support from the Liberal National Government.
Premier and Tourism Minister Colin Barnett, who visited Arcadia this week, said the development of key tourism precincts and venues, including Elizabeth Quay and the Perth Stadium, was paving the way for Western Australia to attract world-class events.
"In the wake of The Giants, which was a huge success in 2015, Arcadia is a great coup for Western Australia and will attract an audience of more than 10,000 people, including several hundred interstate and international visitors," the Premier said.
"It will add to the visitor numbers of more than four million at Elizabeth Quay, since it opened in January 2016. This figure is set to grow with many more big events planned at Perth's premier outdoor events venue over forthcoming months."
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the high calibre of international arts and cultural events, including The Giants and Arcadia, had established WA's reputation as an international cultural event destination.
"Arcadia will feature a diverse mix of internationally renowned artists as well as local musicians," Mr Day said.
"Thanks to a special union between Arcadia and Yallorr Keeninyarra (Dance of the Whadjuk Noongar people), audiences will also be treated to a spectacular performance not performed traditionally in front of the West Australian public in more than a century."
Concert goers and visitors to Elizabeth Quay this weekend are strongly encouraged to use public transport - the train, ferry or free CAT bus - due to road closures in the precinct.
The State Government is proud to support the Arcadia Spectacular shows through Tourism WA, the Department of Culture and the Arts and Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority.
