A local teacher, who successfully inspires primary school students to appreciate the science impacting on their daily lives, has been named the subject's 2012 Western Australian Educator of the Year.
Mady (Marion) Colquhoun, a science specialist teacher at Armadale Primary School, encourages her students to be interested in science and to have confidence in their observations and understanding.
Science and Innovation Minister John Day congratulated Mrs Colquhoun, as well as the five other award recipients and the 2012 Western Australian Science Hall of Fame Inductee, all of whom were honoured today at the 11th annual Western Australian Science Awards presentation ceremony.
"Mrs Colquhoun is a dedicated teacher who motivates her students to notice and understand science in everyday life and to recognise that they are being scientists by observing and thinking about the world around them," Mr Day said.
"Mrs Colquhoun has also demonstrated success in leadership roles within the primary science education community in the State and manages a range of extra-curricular activities for the school community.
"Outstanding science educators, such as Mrs Colquhoun, are ensuring our students are equipped with the confidence to make good decisions and developing critical skills for a future career in science or technology.
"Innovation and advances in science play a crucial role in ensuring continued development of the State and prosperity for our future generations and the Western Australian Science Awards provide an opportunity to recognise the people whose passion and commitment to science research, engagement and education is making a significant impact."
