  • Features Australia's only $1million pacing race
  • First held in Perth in 1936

Australasia's finest pacers will descend on Gloucester Park over the next fortnight as they compete for the 2012 V75 Inter Dominion championship.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said it was exciting to see the southern hemisphere's premier harness racing event back at its birth place.

"The first Inter Dominion championship was held in Perth in 1936 and was the brainchild of Western Australian harness racing identities James Brennan and J.P. Stratton," Dr Hames said.

"The 2012 championship will mark the 13th occasion the series has been held in Perth, which is more times than any other city, and the State Government, through Eventscorp, is proud to support its return."

The Minister said organisers were expecting more than 40,000 people through the gates at Gloucester Park during the four meeting series, including more than 2,000 visitors from interstate and overseas.

"Harness racing fans will be in for a treat with local champion Im Themightyquinn heading a strong field which includes Victorian rival Smoken Up, Mr Feelgood from New South Wales and New Zealand pacers Auckland Reactor and Raglan," he said.

The 2012 V75 Inter Dominion championship will feature three nights of qualifying heats with the top nine point scorers qualifying for the $1million grand final on Friday, March 2.

As well as all the action on the track, fans will be treated to live entertainment, including performances by Darryl Braithwaite on tonight's opening night and Perth band Gyroscope after the grand final.
