Australia Day 2012 Message from the Premier

Premier Colin Barnett will today wish all West Australians a happy and safe Australia Day at a citizenship ceremony in Joondalup.

  • West Australians encouraged to think about what it is to be Australian
  • 2,100 people from 91 countries to take part in 60 ceremonies

Premier Colin Barnett will today wish all West Australians a happy and safe Australia Day at a citizenship ceremony in Joondalup.

"The celebration of Australia Day means different things to different people," Mr Barnett said.

"Whether it is going to tonight's Australia Day Skyworks; flying a flag from your car; enjoying a family barbecue, a day at the beach, a street party or watching tennis and cricket on TV, just have a great day."

Historically, Australia Day marks the anniversary of the first British Settlement at Sydney Cove in 1788.

"Today it is much more than that.  It is a national day for everyone, a day to celebrate our past achievements, our freedoms and way of life, and our shared aspirations for the future," the Premier said.

"I ask every West Australian to pause for a moment to think about what it is to be Australian and how you can help maintain a cohesive, tolerant and safe community."

The Premier said Australia Day was also a very special day for those who take up Australian Citizenship.  Today some 2,100 West Australian residents will become Australian Citizens, including the 75 new citizens in the City of Joondalup.

"One in four West Australians have been born overseas.  They have played a major role in building the State and its prosperity," he said.

"I thank all new citizens for choosing Australia and congratulate them on their Australian Citizenship."
