Australian Laureate Fellowship for McCulloch

Science and Innovation Minister John Day today congratulated Winthrop Professor Malcolm McCulloch on being awarded a 2012 Australian Laureate Fellowship for his work into the conservation of coral reefs.
Mr Day said Professor McCulloch was a pioneer in coral reef and climate change research and this award further demonstrated his significant contribution to science.
"I congratulate Winthrop Professor McCulloch on this new Fellowship," he said.
"His work has been instrumental in developing innovative techniques to identify climate change indicators in coral which is assisting our understanding of how external actions impact the environment.
"Winthrop Professor McCulloch was awarded a WA Fellowship in 2009 for his outstanding research over five years and he now leads the UWA Advanced Geochemical Facility for Indian Ocean Research; during this time he has attracted more than $6million in research funding to the State.
"He is also an ambassador for Western Australian science and provides expert advice to relevant government departments, universities and the general public to inform and assist climate change policy development."
Winthrop Professor McCulloch is only one of two members in WA to be elected to the Royal Society in the United Kingdom, the world's oldest scientific academy.
The 2012 Australian Laureate Fellowship will help him investigate the future of coral reefs and other marine calcifiers in response to rising carbon dioxide and ocean acidification.
