Banking on Kalgoorlie's gold boom history
Former Western Australian Bank becomes State heritage-listed
Listing means there are now 13 heritage-listed places on Hannan Street
The 114 year-old former Western Australian Bank on Hannan Street in Kalgoorlie has been recognised with State heritage listing.
Making the announcement in Kalgoorlie today, Heritage Minister Albert Jacob said the building added to the rich culture of Hannan Street which now featured 13 State Heritage listed places.
"The former Western Australian Bank was built in a period of unprecedented economic growth in the Goldfields, following on from the 1890s gold rush. It was during this time that reliable banking services were in demand," Mr Jacob said.
"Built in 1900, the two-storey Federation Free Classical style stone, brick and corrugated iron-roofed building alludes to the spirit of optimism and confidence at that time.
"The building is a fine example of prominent WA architect Sir J J Talbot Hobbs' work, and is a rare example of his approach to interior design."
Hobbs was skilled at adapting classical design principles for the hot, dry climate and used deep verandahs, dust-proof ventilators, window gearing in the building, as well as a vestibule.
"The building retains much of its original and ornate interior detailing, including its coffered and pressed metal ceilings with richly decorated cornices. It is also representative of the once common practice of constructing banks with integrated manager's residences," the Minister said.
The Western Australian Bank was the first banking institution to be established in Kalgoorlie. The bank amalgamated with the Bank of New South Wales in 1927, which today operates as Westpac Bank Australia.
Ownership of the former bank was transferred to the Western Australian Mint in 1998 and, since 2003, has been occupied by the Department of Sport and Recreation.
