An extraordinary display of up to 30 hot air balloons will take over the skies above Northam as part of the prestigious 2015 Australian National Ballooning Championships.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said Northam was regarded as Western Australia's premier hot air ballooning destination and it was a great coup for the town to host the championships, which were last held 31 years ago in WA.
"The championships have attracted competitors from across Australia as well as countries such as China, Japan, Russia and the UK," Dr Hames said.
"The event will not only showcase the picturesque Avon Valley countryside to national and international visitors, but is also sure to attract many spectators, creating a vibrant atmosphere and supporting the local economy.
"It's a fantastic time to visit Northam and the Avon Valley to check out the balloons plus enjoy the community events and entertainment."
Australian competitors include current Women's World Hot Air Balloon champion Nicola Scaife, five-time Australian champion Paul Gibbs and 2014 Australian champion Matthew Scaife.
The event is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism WA's Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said Royalties for Regions was investing in opportunities which encouraged visitors to discover and revel in the rich experiences that regional WA offered.
"Regional tourism creates great social and economic prospects for people who live and work in the regions," Mr Redman said.
"Tourism has a strong influence on regional development and events like this are a strategic asset for our State."
