Beverley Church State heritage listed
- St Mary's Anglican Church standing proud for more than 120 years
10th State heritage registered place in Beverley
Memorial lychgate is the only known war memorial of this kind in WA
A Beverley church that has been serving its community since 1892 has been listed on the State heritage register, Heritage Minister Albert Jacob announced today.
St Mary's Anglican Church Precinct comprises St Mary's Anglican Church, St Mary's Anglican Rectory and Parish Hall, a rare timber memorial lychgate and a mature eucalyptus citriodora (lemon scented gum).
"St Mary's has been continually used as the local Anglican parish over the past three centuries, from the late-19th century through to today," Mr Jacob said.
"The church was built following the arrival of the railway to Beverley, which saw the town become the rail terminus for both government and private trains as well as the overnight stopping point for passengers travelling from Albany to Perth."
The Minister said St Mary's Anglican Church Precinct was the 10th place in Beverley to be listed on the State Register of Heritage Places.
"The church, in its original semi-rural churchyard setting, is a simple Federation gothic style and still stands with its original features with only minor modifications," he said.
"Inside the church the gabled roofs, gothic arches, triple windows and the use of local stone provide a flowing open space of grandeur."
The precinct is also home to the memorial lychgate, which is the only known war memorial lychgate in WA. Two brass plaques commemorate church members who died during the World Wars.
"The memorial stands as the gateway to the church and is significant due to the rarity of World War II memorials in WA and the only known lychgate memorial," Mr Jacob said.
"The precinct is a proud local landmark and is indicative of the centralisation of the parish with its fine architectural detailing illustrating the optimism of the region at that time."
