Premier Colin Barnett today opened the new state-of-the-art Bridgetown Regional Library.

Mr Barnett said the new library provided a range of improved services to the South-West region and created a social centre for the community.

"Amenities such as the new Bridgetown library are great assets for regional towns," he said.

The Premier said in addition to books, the library had a great deal to offer the whole community.

"The library boasts youth facilities, community meeting rooms, a cafe and an exhibition space," he said.

"This facility will provide a place for the community to come together and for everyone, from toddlers to seniors, to interact, learn and access information."

The State Government contributed $2.5million to the $4million project through the Royalties for Regions Country Local Government Fund.

Mr Barnett said the new facility was located close to the medical centre, skate park, recreation centre and swimming pool, further creating a social and cultural centre.

The Premier said the library had started operating in May and its value had already been demonstrated by figures showing that in its first month of operation the number of patrons increased by 33 per cent.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said facilities such as the Bridgetown Regional Library played a key role in attracting and retaining people in regional communities.

"These facilities will make a big difference for Bridgetown and the region," Mr Grylls said.

"This is a great example of the role Royalties for Regions plays in providing essential services and creating community hubs."
