Bridging the gap on mental illness through music
A talented collective of musicians, artists, rappers and bands have joined forces to break down the stigma of mental illness among young people at a free concert called Music to Open Your Mind, in Fremantle today.
The Music Feedback program being launched at the concert aims to raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues for 12 to 25-year-olds to encourage them to participate in music and improve their mental wellbeing.
Mental Health Minister Helen Morton said it was vital to engage young people on issues of mental health because 75 per cent of all mental illness began before a person is 24-years-old.
"Between 25 and 50 per cent of mental health problems in adults can be prevented if they received treatment during childhood and adolescence," Mrs Morton said.
"By talking openly and honestly about mental health issues, we can let people who are experiencing a mental illness know they are not alone and that a range of services are available to them and their families."
Music Feedback also includes a do-it-yourself kit by Cultural Infusion for young people to hold their own low-cost Music Feedback branded events.
An interactive website at http://www.musicfeedback.com.au will go live during Youth Week (April 1-10) featuring interviews with musicians, a function to upload their own music and lyrics and download tracks from popular artists.
The Minister said Music Feedback was funded by $150,000 from the Mental Health Commission and $25,000 from the Office of Youth which includes the production and release of 40,000 CDs and DVDs which will be distributed to young people throughout WA.
"The publications encourage young people to talk openly about mental health issues and feature the music of popular artists including San Cisco, Art vs Science, Hungry Kids of Hungary, Opt Amus and others," she said.
"With proper treatment and support, many people with a mental illness can function well in the community. They can continue to hold down jobs, maintain relationships and make important contributions to society."
Music to Open Your Mind is a free family concert and market day, with live music from local bands, market and food stalls, free children's activities and stalls providing information on mental health issues and services at King's Square, Fremantle from 1pm to 5pm.
