Broome's clean sweep in beach awards
Broome's Cable Beach has been named as the State's best at this morning's WA Clean Beach Challenge awards held at the Indiana Tea House in Cottesloe.
The competition, organised by Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) WA and Surf Life Saving WA, encouraged care, protection and management of WA's coastal regions.
Environment Minister Donna Faragher said Broome's local residents had made outstanding achievements to manage a number of unique challenges at the beach.
"Cable Beach is a tourism hotspot with a number of businesses on the beach and it is also an important breeding ground for turtles and crabs," Mrs Faragher said.
"The community has banded together to overcome issues that affect the environment including land sharing, vehicle access and erosion caused by cyclone conditions.
"The Cable Beach community embodies the community spirit needed to effectively manage and protect this important asset."
In addition to winning the overall title, Cable Beach also took out the award for community action.
Cemetery Beach & Pretty Pool Beach's Care for Hedland Environment Association picked up the litter prevention award, while Rockingham Beach won the resource management award, City Beach took out the friendliest beach category and Point Moore Coast Care Group received the Protection of Environment award.
The Minister thanked the nominated beach community members for their tireless efforts and commitment to providing a cleaner coast for Western Australia.
"These awards are an opportunity to recognise the commitment from community groups, individuals and organisations to maintain and improve our public beaches," she said.
"The State Government is proud to assist with initiatives that aim to enhance and maintain our coastal environment."
Cable Beach advances to the national competition and the National Clean Beach Challenge winner will be announced in April.
KAB in WA is supported by the Department of Environment and Conservation.
