Bunbury cathedral heritage-listed
Heritage Minister John Castrilli today announced heritage listing for Bunbury's St Boniface Anglican Cathedral and Bishopscourt.
St Boniface Anglican Cathedral is the only war memorial cathedral in Western Australia and is the biggest structure of its kind in the State.
"Built in 1962, this landmark building holds a special place in the hearts of many residents and is a source of immense pride," Mr Castrilli said.
"It is also representative of a larger story about the importance of the Anglican Church in the South-West of the State and the development of Bunbury."
The Minister said St Boniface was the first Anglican cathedral to be built in regional WA and is one of the State's four regional cathedrals.
The adjacent Bishopscourt was built in 1905 as the residence of the inaugural Bishop of Bunbury, following the creation of the diocese.
"The size and grandeur of Bishopscourt reflected the importance of the position of the Anglican Bishop of Bunbury at the time," Mr Castrilli said.
"It is still used as the Bishop's residence today and is one of the biggest single-storey Federation Queen Anne-style houses in the State.
"It is a pleasure to recognise these buildings and their value and importance to this State by including them on the State Register of Heritage Places."
The Heritage Council of Western Australia maintains the State Register of Heritage Places.
