CHOGM to put Perth in international spotlight

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2011 would give Western Australia a chance to establish itself as a modern and attractive world-class destination.

Premier Colin Barnett said the meeting would be the biggest event to hit Perth since the America's Cup, with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the leaders of 54 Commonwealth nations set to participate.

The meeting is expected to attract about 5,000 delegates and visitors, including international media.

"In terms of international significance, Perth's hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government will be of the scale of the America's Cup and the Commonwealth Games. There may not be as many people, but this will put WA and Perth at the centre of world affairs in two years' time," Mr Barnett said.

"This is going to be very important for our position as the major Australian city on the Indian Ocean. For that week in 2011 Perth and Western Australia will be very much at the centre of world political debate.

"CHOGM is, however, more than simply a meeting of Commonwealth nation world leaders. It includes business, youth and community forums surrounding the main meeting.

"I hope the WA community will get right behind this and we can put on a fantastic show and sell all that Western Australia has to offer to the world."

The Premier said the State Government would start working with the Commonwealth on venues and timing.

"There are a host of logistical issues to be dealt with in a short time frame, but WA can do this and do it superbly," he said.

"For Western Australia it gives us the opportunity to show what we have to offer as an economy and as a people. It's a rare and unique opportunity to promote WA throughout the world, particularly in Southern Asia and the African-Indian Ocean Rim."
