Calm seas and smooth sailing for the STS Leeuwin II
The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation (LOAF) today received a State Government Lotterywest grant of almost $2million to assist in the refit of Sail Training Ship (STS) Leeuwin II.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier Donna Faragher said the grant would help significantly towards a major refit to ensure the vessel remained suitably equipped to continue delivering unique programs to the community.
"Through Lotterywest support, LOAF will be able to continue its important community services that support young men and women to develop to meet life's challenges with courage through shared adventure," Mrs Faragher said.
"This crucial refit will include upgrades or replacements of structural equipment, the electrical system and navigation, communications and safety equipment.
"STS Leeuwin II, owned and operated by the foundation, provides a unique sailing and adventure experience to young people and the wider community. Participation develops leadership, community spirit and respect for each other and raises environmental awareness."
The foundation also offers voyages for adults, young people with disabilities, corporate and private charters, and public sails.
Leeuwin II is a working ship and since 1986 has provided life-changing sailing adventures for about 32,000 people. All participants become part of the ship's team, including sailing, steering, navigating, cleaning the ship and even climbing the mast.
Lotterywest has supported the foundation since 1991 with a total of $4,501,258 provided towards onboard equipment and refits.
"The Lotterywest contribution to the foundation is another example of how proceeds from lottery games go towards supporting the Western Australian community," Mrs Faragher said.
"It also builds on the significant $600,000 three-year agreement signed by the Liberal-National Government in 2010 to ensure the tall ship Leeuwin II remained afloat."
Over the 2010-11 financial year, Lotterywest raised $240.3million for health services, sporting organisations, the arts and thousands of community and charitable groups across WA.
