  • Centralises outpatient care to improve access and convenience

The State Government's new $54million Comprehensive Cancer Centre Stage II, which will house all outpatient treatments for cancer patients, was opened today by Health Minister Kim Hames.

Dr Hames said the centre was the second complete building to officially open in the multi-billion dollar redevelopment of the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre.

"This is a major boost for the 50,000 West Australians living with cancer.  It will make accessing care easier for more than 7,000 patients who will use this centre each year," he said.

The Minister said the second stage of the cancer centre would bring existing services - currently operating in several locations - on campus together under one roof.

"Now the building is complete, services will be transitioned across during the next six months, enabling more than 140,000 patient visits each year," he said.

Once fully transitioned, the Comprehensive Cancer Centre will house radiation oncology, medical oncology, haematology, outpatient palliative care, SolarisCare (complementary therapies), Allied Health Supportive Care and clinical trials.

"In addition to these wonderful new facilities, the centre has also been designed to accommodate Australia's first CyberKnife system.  CyberKnife is advanced radiation technology proven to be more effective in delivering radiation therapy," Dr Hames said.

The Minister said additional support through the Federal Government had enabled CanTeen to set up a designated age-specific area purely for adolescents and young adults with cancer.

The capital works projects at QEII Medical Centre will transform the site into one of Perth's biggest medical, education and research facilities.
