- Inaugural Kununurra Youth Employment Expo to showcase careers in the region
Young people to learn about employment opportunities associated with Ord East Kimberley Expansion project
Kununurra high school students will have the opportunity to learn about the range of jobs available in the region at LandCorp's inaugural Youth Employment Expo today.
Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said major State Government initiatives such as the Ord-East Kimberley Expansion Project had created new career options for young people in the region.
"The Ord Expansion project will continue to expand the local economy and provide long term jobs for our young people," Mr Grylls said.
"The Youth Employment Expo highlights the opportunities now on offer in the region, including careers in agriculture, tourism, resources, business and government."
The expo will bring together more than 20 local businesses at the Kununurra Town Oval to display a wide variety of jobs from banking and customer service to machinery operators and agricultural science.
"This is an opportunity to teach young students about the positive impact a career can have on their lives and foster a long term interest in working in the region," the Minister said.
"The Ord project has employed over 550 people since it began, with a high proportion of Aboriginal workers, and there are new opportunities being created all the time."
More than 180 students from East Kimberley Clontarf Academy, Wyndham District High School and Kununurra District High School will attend the event organised by LandCorp in conjunction with the Department of Regional Development and Lands, MG Corporation and Leighton Contractors.
Students from years 9 to 12 will also tour the Ord-East Kimberley Expansion Project to view the types of work being undertaken.
