Climate change
A forum for the agricultural industry to discuss the risks and opportunities ofclimate change policy has met for the first time in Perth.
Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman has welcomed the first meeting of the Agricultural Climate Change External Reference Group which draws together representatives from industry, the private sector and government departments.
"With forecasts of increasingly dry seasons for the South-West of Western Australia and the possibility of more cyclones bringing more rain in the north, it's more important than ever that climate change policies at all levels of government assist the agricultural industry to adapt, prepare and take advantage," Mr Redman said.
"With the uncertainty surrounding the introduction of a nation-wide Emissions Trading Scheme, I am keen for the group to provide information to this Government on the possible industry opportunities and risks associated with various polices and initiatives.
"Climate change policy is being developed at a rapid rate so it is important key stakeholders are well informed and have a good understanding of issues and concerns.
"The group provides a forum for free and frank discussion about industry adaption to climate change and initiatives to mitigate its effect.
"As a result, the Department of Agriculture and Food will be well informed about industry concerns and aware of any concerns in the development of policy."
The reference group will be chaired by Badgingarra farmer Dale Park, WAFarmers' spokesman on climate change.
"Mr Park has a wealth of knowledge about climate change and many established relationships with stakeholders through his previous roles on industry committees with WAFarmers," the Minister said.
Other members include the Pastoralists and Graziers Association; the Forest Industries Federation (WA) Inc.; the Australian Association of Agricultural Consultants; the Grains Research and Development Corporation; Meat and Livestock Australia; the Grain Industry Association of WA; the Wine Industry Association; Western Dairy and the CSIRO.
The group will meet every four months for an initial 12 months.
