Clontarf's next generation of football champions

Students at the Royalties for Regions-funded Clontarf Football Academy gave Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls a guided tour of their Carnarvon campus recently, to showcase the college's unique football-based education program.

Students at the Royalties for Regions-funded Clontarf Football Academy gave Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls a guided tour of their Carnarvon campus recently, to showcase the college's unique football-based education program.


The academy, part of the Carnarvon Senior High School, opened earlier this year thanks to funding from the State Government's Royalties for Regions program.


Eight new Clontarf Football Academies in regional Western Australia will be established with the $5million funding over the next three years.


The Minister said this program is one of many Royalties for Regions-funded initiatives aiming to benefit the next generation of indigenous people in regional WA.


"The program teaches students the value of having a good education and the importance of the discipline needed to reach the highest standard of all aspects of their life," he said.


"This is an excellent program; it's based on Australian Rules Football but also recognises the importance of planning for the player's life after football."


Participating in the program not only gives students coaching to progress to a high standard of football but provides the opportunity to access education and training services so at the completion of year 12, they are ready to enter the workforce.


To stay enrolled in the program, students must attend school regularly, dedicate themselves to their studies and follow the academy's requirements for good behaviour and self-discipline

  • Carnarvon campus one of four academies, including Northam, Derby and Roebourne-Karratha currently under way and with students engaged in the program
  • Academies which received funding, but are yet to be opened are Fitzroy Crossing and Katanning, the remaining two locations are still under consideration
