The State Government has awarded $752,533 through Coastwest grants to 30 coastal management projects.

Planning Minister John Day said the latest round of grants would support diverse coastal management projects from the rehabilitation of bushfire affected areas in Margaret River to a clean-up on Dirk Hartog Island in the Gascoyne region.

"Coastwest grants are designed to provide opportunities for coastal managers to partner local community groups to help maintain and improve Western Australia's extensive coastline," Mr Day said.

"The grants are important because they assist in the identification, protection and maintenance of environmental values, aesthetic qualities, biodiversity and water quality in coastal zones.

"This program represents great value for the State and its community as every dollar invested has leveraged three dollars in cash or in-kind contributions from the community and coastal managers, such as local government.

"They encourage and foster sustainable recreational and tourist use of the coast by assisting in the maintenance of the recreational amenity and provision of public access to the coast."

Projects to receive funding support include:

  • the 2013 WA Beach Clean Up which aims to expand to engage more than 1,000 volunteers in a beach clean-up event at 130 coastal sites around WA

  • three projects to devise foreshore management plans for key coastal areas in the Shire of Roebourne

  • a grant for the Peron Naturaliste Partnership to engage the community of the City of Busselton in preparing and responding to future impacts and opportunities posed by climate change

  • a grant to Conservation Volunteers Australia to monitor nesting activity for the threatened flatback sea turtle population at 80 Mile Beach in the Kimberley.
