Construction has officially started on the Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Facility - the community sport and recreation hub which will also become home to the Fremantle Dockers.

Premier Colin Barnett and Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies this morning helped turn the first sod at the site of the City of Cockburn's complex, which will replace the city's existing South Lake Leisure Centre with a state-of-the art sport, recreation and aquatic centre.

"The State Government has contributed $12.4 million towards the community use parts of this $109 million centre," the Premier said.

"This is made up of a special allocation of $10 million and $2.4 million from the Department of Sport and Recreation's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.  The State Government has also contributed land to this project.

"This multi-purpose facility will play an important role in meeting the needs of the rapidly expanding southern metropolitan corridor."

Ms Davies said sport and recreation facilities like this one were wonderful ways for local communities to stay connected and active at the same time.

"Research tells us that active adults and kids don't only reap physical benefits from sport and recreation, but important mental health benefits too," she said.

"The complex will also house the training facilities and headquarters for the Fremantle Dockers, including offices, a Fremantle Football Club retail shop and an AFL-standard oval. Students from Curtin University will be able to use the facilities for integrated learning."

For public use, the facility will include:

  • three swimming pools, a hydrotherapy pool and recovery pools
  • multipurpose indoor courts
  • running and walking tracks and an oval
  • sport medicine facilities
  • wellness and fitness studios including a gym and rehabilitation facilities
  • education facilities such as a lecture theatre, health and wellness labs and community classrooms
  • playground, picnic areas and a cafe.

The Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Facility is due for completion in March-April 2017.
