Individuals and organisations contributing to better accessibility and inclusion in Western Australian communities were recognised today in the State Government's Disability Services Commission's annual Count Me In Awards.

Disability Services Minister Helen Morton said the awards were the highlight of Disability Awareness Week, which runs from December 2-8.

"The awards demonstrate to the whole community what can be achieved when an individual or organisation makes a commitment to provide services and facilities that are welcoming to all," Mrs Morton said.

"I congratulate everyone who entered this year's awards.  The work undertaken makes a huge difference in the lives of so many and therefore enriches the entire community."

Inclusion WA won two category awards and the overall Dr Louisa Alessandri Award for Excellence for its Recreation Access Program (RAP).

RAP aims to maximise participation by people with disability in community recreation activities and help create sustainable relationships between them and their community.

Count Me In Awards were presented in nine categories, including two new awards for Innovation and Excellence, and Governance and Leadership, which Inclusion WA jointly won with disability service provider, Nulsen.

The Minister said the Count Me In Awards recognised the remarkable achievements of the disability sector.

"By increasing recognition for the sector, it encourages the development of inspirational role models who overcome the barriers and challenges that disability can present," she said.
