  • Eligible pensioners receive $500 annually towards the cost of fuel and taxi fares

The State Government's Country Age Pension Fuel Card Scheme today marked its latest milestone with the presentation of the 45,000th card to an aged pensioner in Geraldton.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said he was thrilled that since the introduction of the Royalties for Regions-funded scheme in 2009, 45,000 pensioners across regional Western Australia had now benefited.

Mr Grylls presented Geraldton local Albert Kauffman with his commemorative card at an event this morning and heard how the scheme would benefit the first-time cardholder.

"It was wonderful to meet Mr Kauffman and share this great occasion with him. The scheme benefits everyone differently and I always enjoy hearing people's stories and what the scheme means to them," he said.

Cardholders are entitled to $500 towards the cost of fuel and taxi fares each year and Mr Kauffman said it would be helpful in fuelling the car to get to appointments, visit friends and go shopping.

"I am really looking forward to having an extra $500 a year to spend on petrol so I can drive to Perth to see my grandchildren," Mr Kauffman said.

The Minister thanked the scheme's partners, the Department of Transport, Wright Express, Australia Post and Centrelink for their part in helping bring this benefit to the community.

"The scheme helps to alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by those in our community on fixed incomes.  In addition, it provides a social benefit by ensuring those who otherwise might not be able to get out and about are actually able to do so," he said.

"I encourage anyone who is eligible who hasn't applied for a card to do so as soon as possible."
