Cranes named by children to lift hospital
- Winners of naming competition announced
- Five cranes at new children's hospital named by WA kids
- Almost 700 entries received from across the State
Health Minister Kim Hames today unveiled the names of the five cranes to be used to build the new children's hospital (NCH).
Dr Hames announced the crane names and winners during a celebration of the Name the Cranes competition, at the hospital construction site in Nedlands. They are:
- Koolangkas (Children in Noongar) - Shanique, 11 years
- Kranosaurus - Tyler, 10 years
- Magnus - Priya, 10 years
- Sir Lift a Lot - Scarlett, six years
- Tall Bert - Leah, eight years.
The competition, which was launched by the Minister in July, gave children aged three to 16 the chance to name the five cranes to be used at the NCH site.
Dr Hames said the Name the Cranes competition received almost 700 entries from across the State, including entries from Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Geraldton, Roebourne, Bunbury and Perth.
"With such fantastic entries, narrowing them down to five was not an easy task. With guidance from the NCH Project's Youth Advisory Committee, we now have five unique names for our cranes," he said.
"I would like to congratulate the five winners and thank all entrants for their outstanding effort."
Each winner received a prize pack, including a certificate; construction hat and vest; and a toy crane.
Two cranes (Kranosaurus and Tall Bert) are currently on site, with the remaining three being delivered on site by May 2013. The cranes will bear banners displaying their names.
