Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney today announced the fulfilment of an election commitment for works to the Collie Child Care Centre made by former member for Capel, Steve Thomas.

The Department of Treasury and Finance has made available a grant of $250,000 over three years that will address long standing design faults to the building.

Collie-based registered builders, White Building Company Pty Ltd, has been awarded an initial tender worth $56,093 for essential repairs has been awarded to under a tender managed by the department.

"This was an election commitment I intended to fulfil as soon as I could to address the concerns of both parents and staff using the building," Mrs McSweeney said.

"The works will ensure the centre meets current building standards and will replace the stormwater system and roof.

"I am confident the initial scope of works will address the most urgent needs of the occupants and allow the centre to carry on with its work of caring for Collie kids without the unnecessary disruption of things like roof leakages."

The remainder of funds under the grant would address additional issues raised by occupants such as building security and upgrades to both the air conditioning and the kitchen.

The tender was awarded on March 11 with construction works expected to be completed within 10 weeks.
