Premier Colin Barnett today opened Ellenbrook's new northern pavilion and playing fields, the cornerstone of what will become one of the best and most comprehensive sport and recreation precincts in the State.
The Premier said the opening of the new facilities was a significant step towards creating a whole new sports and recreation precinct for the growing area.
"The Ellenbrook recreation hub will eventually have three grass playing fields, two multipurpose pavilions, four synthetic playing fields and an indoor recreation centre," Mr Barnett said.
"The State Government is pleased to have entered into partnership with the City of Swan to see this facility develop and through the Department of Sport and Recreation has allocated $4.547 million from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund for the development of this Ellenbrook District Open Space precinct.
"As announced in the recent budget, we'll also provide $7 million towards the Ellenbrook Recreation Centre, a commitment we made in 2013."
The northern pavilion and playing fields are just one element of the Ellenbrook recreation hub which also comprises the southern playing fields and pavilion (construction to start shortly) and the yet-to-be-constructed Ellenbrook Recreation Centre.
Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the facilities would give people in and around Ellenbrook every opportunity to enjoy an active lifestyle and reap all the mental, physical and community benefits.
"The State Government is pleased to support the City of Swan and local community in funding these facilities," Ms Davies said.
"The city has put a great deal of research and consultation into providing this precinct through its Ellenbrook Public Open Space and Community Facilities Strategy."
It is estimated that by 2036 the area will service nearly 62,000 residents from the Ellenbrook community.
"The Swan Valley has a vibrant sporting culture so it's important Ellenbrook and the surrounding community has access to quality sporting facilities," Ms Davies said.
