Esperance liquid waste facility and truck wash reopens
The $1.45million redevelopment of the Esperance liquid waste facility and truck wash on Myrup Road is now complete and was opened today by Agriculture and Food Minister Ken Baston and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman.
Mr Baston said investment was part of a strong commitment by the State Government towards the livestock industry, which provided an important economic base for rural and regional Western Australia.
"The facility is used for cleaning stock trucks moving between farms and saleyards within WA," he said.
"The State's $7billion agricultural sector is vulnerable to pest animals, plants and diseases. This facility is important to maintaining our enviable biosecurity status - preventing the transfer of diseases and weeds, improving animal welfare and helping to maintain carriers' equipment."
The Myrup facility uses a single stage anaerobic stabilisation arrangement to control both truck wash waste and domestic liquid waste from the local community.
The redevelopment meets best practice standards in environmental management and no waste water will be discharged to the environment.
The $1.45million project was funded from the Department of Agriculture and Food WA ($520,000), Shire of Esperance ($480,000), Royalties for Regions Country Local Government Fund Regional Group ($350,000) and community in-kind support ($100,000).
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the State Government's Royalties for Regions program had allocated more than $4.2billion to over 3,500 regional development projects since it began in 2008.
"This facility will further protect the Goldfields-Esperance agricultural community from biosecurity risks and is a great example of how Royalties for Regions continues to support local initiatives which deliver economic opportunities for regional communities across WA," Mr Redman said.
