Expanded Metropolitan Youth Bail Service

The State Government has refurbished the Metropolitan Youth Bail Service (MYBS) to provide a more effective and efficient means of preventing and diverting young people from the criminal justice system.

The State Government has refurbished the Metropolitan Youth Bail Service (MYBS) to provide a more effective and efficient means of preventing and diverting young people from the criminal justice system.

Corrective Services Minister Terry Redman today opened the MYBS in Victoria Park and said several new initiatives had been added to the service's original program.

"These include a seven day a week operation with extended hours on Friday and Saturdays until 11pm," Mr Redman said.

"A point of arrest service will be provided to divert young people from custody and include advocacy, advice and assessment; and three Bail Co-ordinator positions will rotate through the Perth Children's Court and Rangeview Remand Centre."

The MYBS recognises the Youth Justice Service's philosophy of prevention and diversion from the criminal justice system as the most effective and efficient means of managing young people.

The Minister acknowledged the good work undertaken by the preceding Supervised Bail Program during the past 17 years and said today's opening had been another expansion of it as the Government continued its significant investment in youth justice.

"It is my hope this newly revamped and expanded service will continue to provide innovative and relevant services to young people and their families and assist young people to make better and more informed choices," he said.
