Expo provides a unique opportunity for skills and careers
Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier today opened a unique event in Perth as part of a direct approach to addressing future skills shortages.
The Skills West Expo, to be held from September 3-5 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, is the first of its kind, with a targeted focus on occupations in demand and high-growth industries in Western Australia.
"The State Government has joined forces with The West Australian to present an expo that has a clear focus on occupations and industry sectors in demand," Mr Collier said.
"The expo will showcase these occupations, while providing a direct link for those people looking to make a career change through training and education."
With more than $100billion worth of resource projects either committed or under consideration in WA, there is a clear need for skilled workers in a range of industries.
Research from the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry shows an additional 240,000 jobs will be created in WA by 2017, including 40,000 in the mining and construction industries.
"Skills West Expo is an important step in preparing for the future," the Minister said.
"Events such as this play a vital role in promoting the numerous employment opportunities that exist across a wide range of occupations in our State."
Mr Collier said among its aims, the expo would promote training for individuals to upskill to a better job, reskill to a new job or gain a qualification to get into the workforce.
It will also raise public awareness of the trades as a worthwhile and valuable career pathway, and give employers a chance to market their employment opportunities in all trades and professions.
The event will feature more than 100 exhibitors, including employers; educators; career advisers; and industry and government bodies, while also offering informative seminar sessions, customised programs and an interactive demonstration area.
There will be special areas for skilled workers and professionals; indigenous and female opportunities; and a dedicated science, technology, engineering and maths area.
The Minister said with renewed focus on training and workforce development, the State Government would maintain its determination to developing, attracting and retaining a skilled workforce for the longer term.
"It's important we act now to ensure all West Australians can be part of the State's strong economic future and take advantage of the many emerging opportunities," he said.
