  • Expressions of interest open for more taxi plates

Following an independent review into transport services, the Department of Transport has called for expressions of interest for extra taxi licences in Margaret River.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the State Government would consider extra plates to service local residents and tourists in the district.

The review by consultants Cardno involved consultation with community stakeholders and local taxi and omnibus operators about demand by tourists for once-off and day hire, access by local residents to medical appointments and shopping, transport for aged care and emergency needs, both within the town centre and the district.

"These discussions have provided great insight into the local taxi transport industry and the needs of local residents and tourists.  With all of the wineries in this region, it's important to provide affordable transport so that people don't drink and drive," Mr Nalder said.

The review found that:

  • all sectors agreed the existing taxi operations were experiencing service delivery issues, particular at peak and night times
  • more attention could be paid to quality of vehicles, service, and access for people with disability
  • other challenges included attracting drivers, mobile phone reception and drivers out of phone contact for long periods.

The Department of Transport will now seek further discussions with stakeholders about the various types of transport that might be required and how to deliver them.
