An Australian-exclusive spectacle of sound and extraordinary pyrotechnics will mark the opening of the 2013 Lotterywest Perth International Arts Festival.

Premier Colin Barnett said the Lotterywest Festival Spectacular BPM Bombs Per Minute would follow on from the huge success of the 2012 opening act, Place des Anges, which was supported by Lotterywest and Tourism WA, through Eventscorp.

"Place des Anges attracted a huge crowd into Perth's CBD and was a massive hit, with more than two tonnes of feathers falling from the sky as part of the performance," Mr Barnett said.

"The 2013 act, BPM, is expected to once again draw big crowds and provide spectacular entertainment for the whole family.

"Performed by French company Les Commandos Percu, Bombs Per Minute will be an extravaganza of sound, light and fire, featuring percussion and rhythmic drumming, amazing fireworks and thumping music.

"The company is renowned worldwide for its spectacular acts and recently performed as part of the opening of the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad."

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the Lotterywest Festival Spectacular BPM Bombs Per Minute would add vibrancy to Perth and attract thousands of spectators to the city.

"This will be the first time Les Commandos Percu has performed in Australia, and it's a great coup to have secured the performance exclusively to Perth," Dr Hames said.

"Tourism WA, through Eventscorp, is proud to join Lotterywest as sponsor of the Perth Festival opening spectacular as part of a four-year sponsorship deal announced last year.

"The festival's free opening shows are extraordinary, high-quality productions which will help to attract local, national and international visitors to the festival and the State."

Held since 1953, Perth International Arts Festival is the longest-running annual international multi-arts festival in Australia, attracting some of the world's best theatre, music, film, visual arts and street arts to the State.
