Fencers en garde in Perth

• Perth hosts the 2016 Asian Masters Fencing Championships

• $7,000 Liberal National Government grant for Fencing WA toward hosting event 

Fencers from 13 to 76 will be testing their best feints, flicks and lunges when they come together for the 2016 Asian Masters Fencing Championships in Perth today.

For the first time, fencers from across Australia and Asia will meet in Western Australia for the 2016 Asian Masters Fencing Championships and a number of other championship events.

About 300 fencers will gather at the Ellie Eaton Pavilion at the Claremont Showgrounds from as far as Iran, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong from today until August 30.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the competition was a coup for WA and the local fencing fraternity.

"Hosted by Fencing WA, this event is the first time an Asian championship event has been held in Australia, let alone WA," Ms Davies said.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for local fencers from our seven Western Australian clubs - particularly our strong masters competition."

Often called lightning chess because of its mix of speed and tactics, fencing is a fast and furious sport marrying its traditional duelling roots with modern equipment and athleticism.   

The Liberal National Government - through the Department of Sport and Recreation - has given Fencing WA a grant for $7,000 towards the event.
