Fiona Stanley Hospital opening on track
- First patients due at Fiona Stanley Hospital 18 months from today
- Construction 80 per cent completed
- Project on time and on budget
Western Australia's newest public hospital is due to open in 18 months on time and on budget, Acting Minister for Health Troy Buswell said today.
Mr Buswell said construction of the $2billion hospital was 80 per cent completed. The hospital was on track to start taking patients in April 2014 as part of a staged commissioning process.
"Most of the building infrastructure is finished so work is now starting on the fit-out of internal clinical areas and the significant landscaping program, with planting being established across the entire site," he said.
The hospital has been designed to make the most of its surrounding environment, natural light and art work. The central courtyard has been brought to life with animal-like sculptures by local artist Olga Cironis positioned among native flora.
Other substantially completed spaces include the modern, open-plan office space throughout the administration, pathology, education and clinical support areas.
"In line with this development is the creation of a high-tech information and communication technology solution, which will put Fiona Stanley Hospital at the forefront of innovation in healthcare," Mr Buswell said.
"The 30-bed mental health facility - which commenced construction in December 2011 - has progressed at a rapid rate and visitors to the site can already see the distinctive curved roof in place."
Beneath the main building, work has been completed on the hospital's 'end-of-trip' facilities, which will provide hospital staff with storage for 180 bikes, showers and other amenities to encourage more sustainable methods of transport.
Awareness sessions have also started across the South Metropolitan Health Service sites, giving all staff the opportunity to find out more about WA's newest tertiary hospital and the changes in the wider health service from 2014.
