Fiona Stanley Hospital takes shape
Images released today show rapid progress being made on Fiona Stanley Hospital just 19 months into construction.
Premier Colin Barnett said it was pleasing to see the new public hospital in Murdoch taking shape and keeping to its budget and timetable.
"We are now starting to see what some of the buildings will look like, especially the pathology building with most of its glass facade now installed," Mr Barnett said.
"The hospital is changing so rapidly as construction moves ahead and it is great to compare the artist's impressions with reality and see how far the project has come."
When it opens in 2014, the 783-bed Fiona Stanley Hospital, which includes 140 beds in the new State Rehabilitation Service, will be the south metropolitan area's major tertiary hospital.
Health Minister Kim Hames said 83 per cent of the patient rooms in the main hospital would be single rooms, which would allow for improved infection control, fewer patient transfers and improved privacy and confidentiality.
"State-of-the-art technology will be integrated into every level of the hospital and the landscape design includes a wide range of outdoor gardens and parks for all to use," Dr Hames said.
Services at the hospital will include a full range of acute medical and surgical services; the State burns service; the State Rehabilitation Service; state-of-the-art emergency care which will support a major trauma centre; and comprehensive cancer services including radiotherapy treatment facilities, medical oncology and haematology.
A world-class medical research facility will be built next to the hospital in conjunction with universities and the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research.
