First Broome North land release proves highly popular

The State Government's recognition of more affordable land being needed in Broome bore fruit in LandCorp's first land release at Broome North, Waranyjarri Estate.

The State Government's recognition of more affordable land being needed in Broome bore fruit in LandCorp's first land release at Broome North, Waranyjarri Estate.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said of the 77 lots priced between $130,000 and $265,000, 87 per cent went to first homebuyers and 13 per cent went to locals. Overall 90 per cent of the purchasers were existing Broome residents.

"The demand for Waranyjarri Estate has been significant, as the high quality yet accessible development represents a realistic opportunity for young families to establish a much sought-after Broome lifestyle," Mr Grylls said.

"The State Government recognised as a priority the need for more affordable land in Broome and accelerated the planning process to deliver Waranyjarri Estate in record time.

"LandCorp worked closely with the Shire of Broome, the Western Australian Planning Commission and Yawuru native title holders to bring land to market in less than 18 months."

The Minister said prospective purchasers at Broome North would soon also have a wide range of housing choice, with five local and three Perth-based builders being selected for the Kimberley's biggest display village at Waranyjarri Estate.

The successful builders are Brolga Developments; Colin Wilkinson Developments; Australian Eco Construction; Williams Homes; H&M Tracey; Niche Q; BGC Modular, and Summit Homes.

"The builders were chosen based on their housing designs being responsive to the Broome climate, the quality of the building design and value for money," Mr Grylls said.

"The display village will be situated at the main entrance to the estate and offer a variety of homes in one convenient location."

The Minister said as part of this initiative, up to 50 house and land packages linked to the selected builders will be released early in 2011.  With lot prices from $160,000 and a competitive market, LandCorp expects builders will be able to offer house and land packages below or near $500,000.

In another first for the region, LandCorp has negotiated with civil works firm Ertech to continue site works during the wet season which will speed up the release of more land at Broome North.

"This groundbreaking initiative will give us a head start for the coming dry season work and also save significant demobilisation costs.

"Most importantly, it will ensure that the much-needed indigenous training programs put in place by LandCorp and Ertech continues," Mr Grylls said.
