First stage of new major hospital car park open
- QEII Medical Centre car park's first stage opens today
- More parking for Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital patients, visitors and staff
- New access point for parking reducing traffic in surrounding suburbs
The first stage of the new multi-deck car park at the Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Medical Centre has opened, significantly boosting the availability of parking at the site.
Today more than 800 parking bays for patients, visitors and priority staff became available at the site, taking the total number of car parking bays available to nearly 3,000.
Acting Health Minister Troy Buswell said the car park was being built to ensure there was enough parking to cater for patients and visitors accessing the expanding services on site.
"The construction of this new car park is a key element of making access to health services on this site as convenient as possible, including Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and the New Children's Hospital, which is due to open in 2015," Mr Buswell said.
The next stage of the car park is due to open by April 2013 and will deliver another 1,000 bays.
Upon completion in 2014, the QEII Medical Centre multi-deck car park will provide more than 3,000 car parking bays.
To reduce disruption, the multi-deck car park is being delivered in stages.
The car park's sole entry and exit point is from a new signalled intersection on Winthrop Avenue, intended to reduce traffic flow into suburban Subiaco and Nedlands streets and leave Hospital Avenue mainly for the use of emergency vehicles, patient pick ups and drop offs.
The car park project is being delivered in partnership with Capella Parking.
