The regeneration of Port Hedland continues with Western Australian developer Finbar today acquiring the former hospital site.

Lands Minister Terry Redman said the contract between Finbar and the State Government through LandCorp would allow for a staged development of the site, which is just over a kilometre from the Port Hedland town centre and overlooking the ocean.

Finbar will now prepare and lodge a development application for stage one of the development, which will consist of a seven level residential complex comprising 109 residential apartments with ground floor commercial tenancies fronting Sutherland Street.

Construction commencement will be subject to approvals and market conditions.

"The total project end value of approximately $390 million is a clear demonstration of confidence in the future of Port Hedland. The project will also bring greater diversity to the housing options available in the town," Mr Redman said.

"As an export hub, Port Hedland will continue to play a critical role in the continued economic wellbeing of the North-West. Export activity remains strong and it is important the town provides housing options for both existing residents or those looking to make Port Hedland their home."

Finbar has already successfully obtained a rezoning of the site from "~community health services' to "~residential' and a density increase of up to R160.

The Minister said the project was the latest new residential development in the Pilbara with LandCorp helping to realise the potential of other land parcels across the region through a mix of residential, commercial and industrial projects in Karratha, Newman, Port Hedland and Onslow.
