Geraldton's tourism industry is set to receive a boost following the restoration of the original railway station, providing a new premise for the city's visitors centre.

The $2.13 million project was made possible with $1 million from the State Government's Royalties for Regions program.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman, who officially opened the building today, said he was pleased one of Geraldton's most iconic and much loved heritage listed buildings had been conserved.

"Built in 1878, the original railway station was the first Government railway station in Western Australia," Mr Redman said.

"The station is situated in a prime location for the Geraldton Visitors Centre to showcase attractions as it is within walking distance for tourists from cruise ships and offers ample  parking for visitors with caravans.

"The site also includes a cafe, creating a place for visitors to stop, relax and plan their stay encouraging them to stay a little longer in Geraldton and the region.

"The $2.13 million restoration project was awarded to local businesses providing a direct benefit to the town's local economy."

The Royalties for Regions Mid West Investment Plan will see funding of $220 million provided to major infrastructure and community priority projects in the Mid-West region.
