Giant-killer Kyrgios to play Hopman Cup

The State Government has signed a new three-year sponsorship deal for Western Australia's international tennis tournament the Hopman Cup.

  • Wimbledon quarter-finalist Nick Kyrgios to play his first Hopman Cup

  • Proudly supported by State Government through Tourism WA

The State Government has signed a new three-year sponsorship deal for Western Australia's international tennis tournament the Hopman Cup.  The deal includes an option for a further five years, securing the event for WA until 2022.

Tourism Minister Liza Harvey made the announcement today as the event organisers revealed the first two teams competing at the Hopman Cup in 2015.

Australia will be represented by 19-year-old giant-killer Nick Kyrgios - who stunned Rafael Nadal on his way to a memorable quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon this year.  Kyrgios' partner will be WA's own Casey Dellacqua who is experiencing some great form and is currently sitting at a career-high 31 in the women's world rankings.

In a further boost to the tournament, two-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has signed on for his third Hopman Cup and will be joined by British 2012 Olympian Heather Watson.

Mrs Harvey said local sports fans would be able to enjoy a double dose of high quality tennis in the next six months.

"Perth will also host its first Davis Cup tie since 2004 when Australia takes on Uzbekistan in a World Group play-off tie at the Cottesloe Tennis Club in September," she said.

"Hopefully that encounter will pave the way for a successful summer for Australian tennis in WA, with teenage sensation Nick Kyrgios and local favourite Casey Dellacqua expected to put up a strong showing at the Hopman Cup."

The Minister said the State Government was proud to be a major and founding sponsor of the Hopman Cup through Tourism WA and she was pleased it had signed a three-year deal to support the tournament.

"Events such as the Davis Cup and the Hopman Cup form an important part of the State Government's strategy to increase the value of tourism to $12billion by 2020," she said.

"They are vital because they add to the State's vibrancy and help attract visitors who inject billions of dollars into the economy.  Events also help generate valuable national and international media coverage for Western Australia."
