The fifth annual York Gourmet Food and Wine Festival gets under way this Western Australia Day long weekend, showcasing fresh produce and premier wine from across the State and around the world.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the historic York Town Hall would host a record 60 stalls with products from throughout the State and abroad.

"The Avon Valley township of York is steeped in history and its close proximity to Perth makes it a popular destination for day trips," Dr Hames said.

The festival will include a degustation lunch and dinner at Laurelville Manor with Australian Iron Chef champion Herb Faust. The Toodyay Butcher Shop will host cooking demonstrations on butterflying a lamb leg and preparing a chicken five ways.

Families can enjoy a cuddly animal farm, showbags and face painting, plus plenty of stalls to showcase the region's produce including olive oil, wines, chilli, yabbies, cheeses and chocolate.

Dr Hames said the State Government was a proud sponsor of the York Gourmet Food and Wine Festival which celebrated the unique produce and rural lifestyle of the Avon Valley.

"This popular festival is supported by the Eventscorp's Regional Events Scheme, which is one component of the Government's $40million over four years commitment to regional events."

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said he was pleased to see the festival engage the York community and its visitors for the fifth year running.

"York is one of the Wheatbelt region's great towns so it is wonderful to see this festival grow and bring the community together in celebration year after year," Mr Grylls said.

"Events bring important social and economic benefits to regional towns. They provide a reason for locals to get excited, an opportunity for people to come together and the increase in visitor numbers is a real boost to local businesses."
