Grant helps ensure a future for landmark red dingo

North Fremantle's Dingo Flour sign is among 27 Western Australian heritage projects to receive funding under the State Government's 2015-16 Heritage Grants Program.
  • 27 heritage places to share in $1.286 million in State Government funding

  • Grants will help generate $2.72 million in conservation works

North Fremantle's Dingo Flour sign is among 27 Western Australian heritage projects to receive funding under the State Government's 2015-16 Heritage Grants Program.

Announcing the grants today, Premier Colin Barnett said the funding helped private owners to conserve and revitalise a range of State Registered heritage places across the State.

"In 2012, the Liberal National Government increased funding for the Heritage Grants Program by committing an extra $1.046 million over four years," the Premier said.

"This year, 11 metropolitan and 16 regional places will receive funding, illustrating the importance the State Government places on supporting custodians of our heritage.

"The grants, when combined with owners' contributions, will generate $2.72 million in conservation works around the State."

Heritage Minister Albert Jacob said since the program's inception in 1997, 717 heritage projects had received grants totalling nearly $17.1 million.

This year, an $82,565 grant will ensure the iconic Dingo Flour sign, part of the Great Southern Roller Flour Mill, continues to welcome visitors to Fremantle.  The sign was first painted on the side of the silos building in 1940.

"The salt-laden winds have aged the building's corrugated sheeting to an extremely brittle state and there is no alternative but to replace it," the Minister said.

"The grant will assist in recladding the silos and repainting the famous Dingo Flour sign, ensuring this much-treasured North Fremantle landmark remains in place for generations to come."

Four projects will receive the maximum grant of $100,000, including the Newmarket Hotel, Hamilton Hill; 10 Moir Street, Perth; Wilhelmsen House, Fremantle; and the Katanning Roller Flour Mill.

"The Newmarket Hotel is being restored from a near-derelict state to a ballet school while the Katanning Roller Flour Mill is being adapted into cafe and boutique accommodation," Mr Jacob said.

The grants program, overseen by the Heritage Council of WA, offers dollar-for-dollar funding to private owners for urgent conservation works or documentation to help plan future works.

It is one of the few grant programs in Australia to assist private owners with the costs associated with maintaining their heritage places.
